Reading eliminates educational barriers, facilitating greater opportunities in education by promoting language development and rational thinking. Education is a methodical process of learning in order to acquire and transmit knowledge, ethics, attitude, and skills; to nurture a critical mind through instructions in theory and practice of reading. Therefore a teacher must motivate the students to develop an excellent reading habit.
The development of life-long reading habits is a continuous process, which starts at home, improves methodically in the school and is carried on in later life through the influences of society.
Many students are not keen on developing their reading habits. A school system is not only responsible for teaching students academic skills but also for developing their reading habits.
Parents have the greatest influence in the life of a child, students usually model the behaviors and attitudes of their parents, by observing them. Hence, parents must themselves make reading as a daily activity if they want their child to nurture reading as a daily activity.
They must also designate a small portion of the house precisely for reading. Parents should also take their child to the local library and ensure they read books on topics of their interest, This could transform into excellent academic performance and personal development in the future.
Other than parents, the school which is the main educational institution of the society also has a critical role to play in improving students reading habits. Teachers must plan specific reading programs that would encourage students to frequently go and read at the school library. The librarian must ensure the available books of different genre and topics to capture the interests of the students. Finally, students must have the intention of improving their reading habits.
There are several ways to improve the existing reading habits of students. This requires the amalgamation of initiatives of several stakeholders, including the government, parents, school management, teachers, etc.
