Teachers must demonstrate that they want to grow professionally
Teachers must learn to develop themselves to be the best in their profession; they must acquire skills, knowledge, and experience before contemplating to move into management and leadership positions.
Receiving feedback positively
Some of the critical attributes are willingness to learn and an interest in the school performance beyond the job. Being able to take input undoubtedly is also vital. Teachers must demonstrate that they are willing to learn and ensure their behavior indicates that too. If a teacher is looking at a specific role or job, identify the gaps in your experience, then proactively fill them.
Acquiring knowledge outside the classroom
There are several benefits to accepting roles outside the school; it enables teachers to develop a different perspective of students, communities, and society. It also helps teachers to take the time to be themselves.
It is essential to take on projects such as organizing an event/school trip. It demonstrates that a teacher is developing organization and leadership skills. However, teachers should not be tempted to take on assignments much more than they are capable of handling. Extra-curricular involvement is critical, but it is prudent to focus on classroom management in the initial years. Planning capabilities
Teachers must seek opportunities to demonstrate their classroom management, leadership, budgeting, and planning skills. Identify something that is of value to the school and one that the teacher is passionate about. Professional development is a combination of knowledge and practice.
There is much information to be learned from observing others and reflecting on that. Intentional observation, along with relevant reading, can be useful in leadership development.
Collaboration within school
Teachers must align themselves with effective leaders within the school, identify their strengths, and create opportunities to collaborate with them. Work in specific projects with specific stakeholders to gain experience. Seek advice/guidance on an innovative idea before implementing them.
Teachers must allocate time for themselves to understand who they are, what they want to achieve concerning professional development, and what they require to engage in for their professional development strategically. Mentoring is central to this process. Having the time to think through a requirement and continually reminding oneself of the acquired expertise is a unique trait.
Networking with other teachers to plan lessons and assess student work would be useful. Teachers can also enroll in courses and read books for professional development.
