Savitha Govindarajan has over 25 years secondary and high school experience in teaching Economics and other subjects at Atomic Energy Central School as well as other schools. Savitha is particularly interested in developing effective educational training and teaching methods. She has developed a number of programs for service education of teaching personnel and has deep understanding of academic institutions and processes. Savitha has conducted a number of workshops and attended many conferences to promote intellectual, social and physical well being of students.

Savitha's pedagogical experience is backed with professional qualification such as a M.S. in Educational Systems Management from BITS,Pilani,M.Phil(Economics), MA and a B.Ed. She has also won the Lion's club "Best Teacher" award in the past.

Work with and for UNESCO (1972-1996): Chairman, International Advisory Committee, Information programmes, 1973-1976. Chairman / Reporter of several international and regional meetings, organized or supported by UNESCO (on national information policy, education and training in information studies, networking, etc.) at HQ, Paris and in other countries. Head of the Section for Institution Building and Networking, UNESCO/PGI,. Undertook Technical Assistance missions to developing countries in Asia, Arab League States, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean supported by UNESCO, UNIDO, UNDP, IDRC, Arab League, etc. These missions included formulation of national information policies, development of information institutions, organizing and teaching in national and regional training workshops and conferences in information studies, introduction of IT. Prepared and/or supported the preparation of guidelines on national and regional information policies, information studies curriculum development, IT, GIS, etc. Retired from UN Civil Service as UNESCO/PGI Regional Adviser for Asia Pacific.

Institutions for Information Studies: Established (under UNESCI sponsorship and UNDP support) a regional post-graduate programme for science information specialists in South Asia at the University of Philippines in Manila, the School of Information Studies for Africa at the University in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, a similar programme for Latin America at the University of Simon Bolivar, Caracas, Venezuela, a regional school for the Pacific islands at the University of Papua -New Guinea (IDRC supported); and a national information school for China in Beijing. Advisory service to the Regional Information School for West Africa in Ibadan, Nigeria, supported by IDRC.

Education: Post-graduate studies in Physics (Univ. of Madras), PG studies in documentation and information in science and medicine in USA (Vanderbilt University and Columbia University) on Rockefeller Foundation and Fulbright scholarships. Worked in various special technical information centres in India (mostly biomedical fields) before joining the Documentation Research and Training Centre, Indian Statistical Institute, Bangalore, in 1962; retired as Professor and Head, in 1984.

Currently associated with the Sarada Ranganathan Endowment for Library Science (1963-) and the Ranganathan Centre for Information Studies (1993-), both not-for-profit national charitable trusts promoting research, lectures, workshops and publications in information studies.

Current projects: Bilingual (Tamil-English) thesaurus for the Central Institute of Classical Tamil, Chennai; Indian languages user interfaces for GSDL (an open source software of the Univ. of Waikato, New Zealand), funded by eIFL, ,the Netherlands; develop multi-lingual multi-media information resources search capabilities.

Awards: Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship, US Medical Library Association Fellowship, American Society for Information Science & Technology / SIG for Promotion of International Cooperation, Society of Information Scientists Fellowship (India), etc.

Editor and publisher of the quarterly Information Studies. On the editorial board of SRELS Journal of Information Management
